Cuban Pygmy-Owl

The Cuban Pygmy-Owl, scientifically classified as Glaucidium siju, is an endemic species native to the island of Cuba. Evoluntionary studies place it within the Strigidae family, where it adapted specifically to the diverse forested habitats and woodland edges of the archipelago. As a diurnal predator, it evolved distinctive physical characteristics, most notably its rounded wings and short tail, which facilitate maneuverability during short-distance hunting flights through dense vegetation.

The species was first formally described by the naturalist Juan Gundlach, whose extensive field work in the nineteenth century established the scientific record for much of Cuba's unique fauna. The owl's design, shaped by its ecological niche, reflects a highly specialized morphology that allows it to thrive in both tropical forests and secondary growth areas. While it remains a subject of intense interest for ornithologists and local conservationists, it is strictly protected under Cuban law due to its localized range and the ongoing need to preserve its native forest environment.
