Everett's Scops-Owl

Everett's Scops-owl (Otus everetti) was formally described by ornithologist Arthur Hay, 9th Marquess of Tweeddale, in 1890. Named in honor of the British collector Alfred Hart Everett, who gathered specimens across the Philippines, the species represents a distinct lineage within the Otus genus. Its taxonomy has historically been complex, with many ornithologists previously grouping it as a subspecies of the Philippine Scops-owl, though it is now recognized as a distinct endemic species found on islands including Samar, Leyte, and Bohol.

The physical design of this owl is an adaptation to its dense, humid forest habitat. Its rounded wings and tail are characteristic of an ambush predator that navigates through thick understory foliage, where maneuverability is prioritized over long-distance soaring. Like other members of its genus, its plumage functions as sophisticated crypsis, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the bark and dappled light of the Philippine canopy, a functional design honed by evolutionary pressure rather than artistic intent.
