Dot-winged Antwren

The Dot-winged Antwren, Microrhopias quixensis, is a small insectivorous passerine bird native to the tropical forests of the Neotropics. First described by the French ornithologist Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1853, the species is named for the distinctive white spots on its wing coverts, which contrast sharply against the dark plumage of the males. Its evolutionary history is tied to the dense understory and mid-story layers of humid evergreen forests, ranging from southern Mexico through Central America and into the Amazon basin, where its rounded wings facilitate agile maneuvering within the tangled vegetation.

The biological classification of the species has been refined over time as modern taxonomy better understands the Antbird family, Thamnophilidae. Its notched tail is a key identification feature often noted by field ornithologists, serving as a distinct morphological trait that separates it from similar antwrens in the region. The bird is considered a representative of the complex biodiversity of lowland rainforests, and its design—honed by millennia of environmental pressure—reflects an adaptation for foraging in the high-density environment of the forest canopy.
