Double-spurred Spurfowl

The Double-spurred Spurfowl, Pternistis bicalcaratus, is a ground-dwelling gamebird native to the scrub and forest fringes of sub-Saharan Africa. Taxonomically categorized within the Phasianidae family, this species has been a subject of ornithological study since it was first formally described by Linnaeus in his 1766 Systema Naturae. Its name reflects its primary physical distinction, the two prominent spurs found on the tarsus of the males, which are utilized in territorial displays and intra-species competition.

The physical design of the species is characterized by an evolutionary focus on terrestrial mobility, evidenced by its distinctively rounded wings and tail shape. These features allow for explosive, short-distance flight when startled, though the bird spends the vast majority of its time foraging in dense cover.
