Double-toothed Kite

The double-toothed kite, Harpagus bidentatus, is a bird of prey native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. Recognized primarily for the two distinct notches on its upper mandible—from which its name is derived—this raptor belongs to the Accipitridae family. It evolved as a specialized predator within the canopy layer, where it relies on its broad wings and maneuverable, slightly forked tail to navigate dense foliage while hunting insects, lizards, and small birds.

Ornithologically, the species was first described by the naturalist John Latham in the late 18th century. Its design, characterized by a slate-gray plumage and contrasting white-barred underparts, serves as an evolutionary adaptation for blending into the shifting light of the rainforest.
