Drab Swiftlet

The Drab Swiftlet, or Collocalia neglecta, is an avian species primarily native to the islands of the Lesser Sunda chain in Indonesia. Unlike many of its charismatic relatives, the Drab Swiftlet was scientifically defined as part of the broader study of swiftlet taxonomy, a field characterized by the subtle morphological differences between species that often share identical nesting behaviors and flight patterns. It exists as a testament to the diverse, albeit understated, biodiversity found within the Wallacea biogeographic region.

The physical design of this species—featuring its characteristic pointed wings and shallowly notched tail—is an evolutionary response to the demands of aerial insectivory in tropical environments. These features allow for the high-speed, agile maneuvering required to hunt while on the wing, often near cave entrances or high forest canopies.
