Eastern Marsh Harrier

The Eastern Marsh Harrier, Circus spilonotus, is a raptor primarily distributed across East Asia, ranging from Siberia and Mongolia to Japan and the Philippines. As a member of the harrier subfamily, its evolutionary design is finely tuned for low-altitude hunting over expansive wetlands and marshes. It was formally described by the naturalist Eijiro Sykes in the 19th century, though it has long been recognized by local ornithological traditions throughout its extensive migratory and breeding range.

The physical characteristics of the Eastern Marsh Harrier represent an adaptation for efficient hunting in open habitats. Its broad, rounded wings provide the necessary lift for slow, quartering flight, allowing the bird to glide silently just above reed beds to detect prey. The pointed tail acts as a critical rudder, enabling the agile mid-air corrections required to navigate through thick vegetation while maintaining stability during wind-buffeted coastal or wetland flights.
