Oriental Honey-buzzard

The Oriental Honey-buzzard is a specialized raptor native to a vast range across Asia, reaching from Siberia down through Southeast Asia. Its evolutionary history is defined by a unique dietary adaptation, as it is one of the few birds of prey that survives primarily on the larvae and nests of social wasps and bees. This reliance has shaped its morphology, resulting in dense, scale-like feathers around the face that serve as a natural armor against stings, and a beak structure specialized for excavating underground hives.

The species was first formally described by Coenraad Jacob Temminck in the early 19th century. Its distinctive soaring wing shape and rounded tail are functional adaptations for navigating the forest canopy and utilizing thermal updrafts during its long-distance migrations.
