Edwards's Fig-Parrot

Edwards's Fig-Parrot, scientifically identified as Cyclopsitta edwardsii, is a diminutive species of parrot endemic to the tropical rainforests of northern New Guinea. It was formally described by the ornithologist Émile Oustalet in 1885 and named in honor of Alphonse Milne-Edwards, a prominent French zoologist and director of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle. The species represents a specialized branch of the fig-parrot genus, reflecting the evolutionary adaptation of these birds to a highly specific diet centered on the fruits of native Ficus trees.

The bird is distinguished by its compact, rounded wing and tail morphology, which facilitates agile movement within the dense canopy layers where it resides. Ornithological documentation from the late 19th and early 20th centuries highlights the species' vibrant plumage and cryptic behavior, factors that made it a significant subject for scientific classification during the era of intensive colonial exploration in the New Guinea highlands.
