Night Parrot

The night parrot, Pezoporus occidentalis, is one of the world's most elusive avian species, historically considered a ghost of the Australian outback. It was first described by ornithologist John Gould in 1861, based on specimens collected in the interior of Western Australia. The bird evolved as a ground-dwelling, nocturnal parrot, a rare adaptation that likely served as a survival strategy against arid-zone predators, though this same behavior made it nearly impossible to observe in the wild for much of the twentieth century.

The bird's design is highly specialized for its unique lifestyle, characterized by its rounded wings for short-distance flight and a long, pointed tail typical of the genus Pezoporus. Its plumage is a mottled mix of yellow and black, providing exceptional camouflage against the spinifex grasses where it dwells. For decades, the species was feared extinct until a verified sighting in 2013 by naturalist John Young in Queensland, which revitalized conservation efforts and scientific interest in the species' recovery.
