Provenance

Where it came from

Eleonora's Falcon was formally described by the Italian naturalist Giuseppe Gené in 1839. The species is named in honor of Eleanor of Arborea, a fourteenth-century Sardinian judge known for her legal code, the Carta de Logu, which included provisions for the protection of raptor nests. This dedication reflects the bird's strong historical association with the cliffs of the Mediterranean basin, particularly Sardinia, where it remains a symbol of regional natural heritage.

The species is distinguished by its unique adaptation to the seasonal migration of passerine birds. Unlike many other raptors, its breeding cycle is delayed until late summer to coincide with the influx of migrating small birds across the Mediterranean. This evolutionary strategy has made the falcon a subject of significant ornithological study, highlighting its precision in hunting and its specialized reliance on specific maritime environments during its reproductive period.
