Fiji Petrel

The Fiji petrel, scientifically identified as Pseudobulweria macgillivrayi, was first described by George Robert Gray in 1859 after a single specimen was collected on Gau Island. Long considered one of the world's most mysterious birds, it was presumed extinct for over a century due to a lack of sightings, leading to its status as a 'lost' species that fascinated ornithologists and conservationists worldwide.

The species is characterized by its dark, sooty-brown plumage and distinct anatomical features, including narrow, soaring wings and a pointed tail that facilitate its elusive, nocturnal lifestyle over the South Pacific. Its rediscovery in the 1980s and subsequent photographic documentation in the 21st century have provided significant insights into its ecology, though the bird remains critically endangered and restricted to highly specific nesting grounds, making it a subject of intense focus for island biodiversity protection efforts.
