Forbes's Plover

Forbes's Plover, known scientifically as Thinornis forbesi, is a small shorebird endemic to the Chatham Islands of New Zealand. It was formally described by the ornithologist George Edward Lodge in the late 19th century and named in honor of Henry Ogg Forbes, a naturalist and explorer who contributed significantly to the understanding of the archipelago's unique biological history. The bird occupies a precarious place in natural history as a species defined by its isolation in the rugged, windswept environments of the South Pacific.

The physical characteristics of the Plover, specifically its rounded wings and distinctively notched tail, are evolutionary adaptations to its coastal habitat, allowing for agile maneuvering amidst rocky shorelines and sandy dunes.
