Red-breasted Dotterel

The Red-breasted Dotterel, scientifically classified as Anarhynchus obscurus and often referred to as the New Zealand dotterel or tūturiwhatu, is an endemic shorebird of New Zealand. Its evolutionary history is deeply tied to the coastal landscape of the North Island and parts of the South Island, where it adapted to open sandy beaches and estuaries. The species has long been a subject of interest in natural history for its distinctive nesting habits and camouflage, which allow it to thrive in vulnerable shoreline environments.
