Fuerteventura Stonechat

The Fuerteventura stonechat, or Saxicola dacotiae, is a species of small passerine bird endemic to the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. It evolved in isolation from its closest mainland relatives, likely diverging due to the unique volcanic topography and arid environment of the archipelago. As an evolutionary product of island biogeography, it has adapted specific physical traits, such as its distinctively rounded wings and notched tail, which facilitate efficient movement through the scrubland and rocky ravines of its limited habitat.

First described in the late 19th century, the bird has long been a subject of interest for ornithologists and conservationists.
