Fulvous-breasted Flatbill

The Fulvous-breasted Flatbill, or Rhynchocyclus fulvipectus, was first formally described by the English ornithologist Philip Sclater in 1860. As a member of the Tyrannidae family, this species is characteristic of the humid montane forests of the Andes, ranging from Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador to Peru. Its distinct morphology, including its characteristically rounded wings and slightly notched tail, serves as an evolutionary adaptation for navigating the dense, cluttered sub-canopy and understory vegetation where it forages for insects.

The species is representative of the complex avian diversity found in high-altitude Neotropical regions, where taxonomists have long studied the genus Rhynchocyclus to understand how closely related flatbills diverge based on subtle differences in plumage coloration and vocalizations.
