Glossy Black-Cockatoo

The Glossy Black-Cockatoo, scientifically classified as Calyptorhynchus lathami, is a species endemic to eastern Australia. It was first described by the ornithologist Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1807. Evolutionarily, the species diverged to become a highly specialized feeder, relying almost exclusively on the seeds of Allocasuarina trees. This dietary dependence dictates much of its life cycle and environmental requirements, making it a critical indicator species for the health of dry sclerophyll forests.

The bird is distinguished by its distinct morphology, characterized by broad wings that allow for a steady, buoyant flight and a notably pointed tail. These physical traits were refined by selective pressures within the eucalyptus and casuarina woodlands it inhabits. Historically, the species has been subject to conservation study due to its slow reproductive rate and the ongoing loss of nesting hollows, which has made it a focus for ecological preservation efforts throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
