Golden-collared Manakin

The Golden-collared Manakin is a small passerine bird native to the humid forests and secondary growth of Panama and northern Colombia. Within the Pipridae family, the species is defined by the distinctive, bright yellow plumage around the neck of the males, which contrasts sharply with their otherwise dark, often black, mantle and wings. Like other members of the Manacus genus, it is best known for its complex courtship rituals, where males congregate at communal display grounds called leks to perform acrobatic snapping and buzzing sounds intended to attract females.

The species was formally described by the ornithologist John Gould in 1843. Taxonomically, the bird is distinguished by its rounded wings and pointed tail, physical characteristics that facilitate the quick, darting flight patterns necessary for maneuvering through dense tropical undergrowth. Its design—an evolutionary result of selective pressures in the Neotropical environment—has made it a subject of significant interest in studies concerning sexual selection and the mechanics of avian acoustic communication.
