Golden-chested Tanager

The Golden-chested Tanager, scientific name Bangsia rothschildi, is a restricted-range bird species primarily found in the humid forests of the Chocó region in Colombia and northwestern Ecuador. It was formally described in 1902 by the ornithologist Ernst Hartert, who named the species in honor of Walter Rothschild, a prominent British zoologist and collector whose extensive private museum contributed significantly to the taxonomy of neotropical birds during the early 20th century.

The bird’s distinctive morphology, characterized by its rounded wing and tail shapes, is an evolutionary adaptation for its life in dense, mid-elevation forest undergrowth. These physical features assist the species in navigating complex vegetation, reflecting a design optimized for short-range maneuvering rather than long-distance migration. Within the ornithological community, the species is regarded as a hallmark of the Chocó endemic bird area, serving as a vital indicator of habitat health in one of the most biodiverse, yet fragile, tropical ecosystems.
