Gould's Petrel

Gould’s Petrel, scientifically classified as Pterodroma leucoptera, was formally described by the ornithologist John Gould in 1844. As a species of gadfly petrel, its nomenclature reflects the mid-19th-century endeavor to categorize the avian life of the Southern Hemisphere, specifically the South Pacific. The bird is named for Gould, a prolific illustrator and taxidermist whose extensive documentation of Australian fauna remains a cornerstone of ornithological history.
