Gray-chested Babbler

The Gray-chested Babbler was first described by the ornithologist Edward Shelley in 1903. It belongs to the monotypic genus Kakamega, named after the prominent Kakamega Forest in Kenya, which serves as a primary stronghold for the species. Its discovery emerged during the period of intensive biological surveys conducted in the Afromontane forests of East Africa, where its elusive nature and preference for dense, tangled undergrowth within mid-altitude forests made it a subject of fascination for early twentieth-century naturalists.

The physical design of the bird, characterized by its distinctive rounded wings and rounded tail, is an evolutionary adaptation for maneuvering through the thick, complex vegetation of the forest understory.
