Gray-headed Lapwing

The Gray-headed Lapwing (Vanellus cinereus) is a migratory plover native to East and Southeast Asia, characterized by its distinctive broad wings and pointed tail. Historically, it has been observed throughout the river valleys of northern China and Japan, where it breeds in open wetlands and paddy fields. It was formally described by the English zoologist Edward Blyth in 1842, a period during which European naturalists were intensely cataloging the avian diversity of the Asian continent to expand the reach of the Linnaean taxonomy system.

The species is noted for its muted, sophisticated plumage, featuring a slate-gray head and breast that transitions into a brownish-white body, punctuated by a striking yellow wattle and legs. Its design is evolutionary, refined over millennia to suit the ecology of floodplains and marshes.
