Great Green Macaw

The Great Green Macaw, scientifically known as Ara ambiguus, is a large neotropical parrot native to the humid forests of Central and South America. Historically, these birds have been part of the complex ecological history of the Darién Gap and the lowland rainforests of Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica. Their distinct biological evolution, characterized by broad wings and a long, tapering tail, allows them to navigate the dense canopy layers of their native habitats with efficiency.

The species is taxonomically defined by its size and specific dietary dependence on the mountain almond tree. Over the past century, the bird has been studied extensively by ornithologists interested in the biodiversity of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. Public and scientific interest in the species has largely been driven by conservation efforts aimed at mitigating the impact of deforestation and habitat loss on these increasingly rare birds.
