Greater Bird-of-Paradise

The Greater Bird-of-Paradise, or Paradisaea apoda, gained significant attention in European natural history during the 16th century, when skins arrived in Spain via the Magellan expedition. The specimens were typically prepared by indigenous peoples of New Guinea with their legs removed, leading early naturalists to believe these birds spent their entire lives aloft, sustained only by nectar and dew. This led to the specific epithet 'apoda,' or 'footless,' cementing their status as mythical, celestial creatures in the Western imagination for many decades.

Carl Linnaeus formally described the species in 1758, helping to shift the understanding of the bird from legend to biological reality. The species is celebrated for its elaborate, broad-winged displays and long, filamentary tail feathers, which males utilize in ritualized courtship lekking. These aesthetic traits have long made them subjects of rigorous ornithological study and high-quality natural history illustration, most notably appearing in the works of 19th-century artist John Gould, who sought to capture the avian splendor that had captivated explorers for centuries.
