Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise

The Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise, Seleucidis melanoleucus, is native to the swamp forests and lowlands of New Guinea. It was first described by the French ornithologist François-Marie Daudin in 1800, based on specimens collected by explorers navigating the complex, biodiverse ecosystems of the region. The bird's unique name refers to the twelve wire-like filaments that extend from its flanks, which the male uses in a complex, rhythmic display to attract mates during the breeding season.
