Greater Sage-Grouse

The Greater Sage-Grouse, or Centrocercus urophasianus, is a ground-dwelling bird native to the sagebrush landscapes of western North America. Its evolutionary history is deeply tied to these arid, shrub-steppe ecosystems, which have served as its primary habitat for millennia. The bird is biologically distinguished by its robust, rounded wings and a distinctive pointed tail, adaptations that allow for short, powerful bursts of flight amidst dense brush.

The species is best known for the complex courtship displays of the males, who congregate on traditional breeding grounds called leks. These performances, involving the inflation of specialized yellow esophageal sacs, have fascinated naturalists for centuries.
