Willow Ptarmigan

The Willow Ptarmigan, or Lagopus lagopus, is a medium-sized game bird belonging to the grouse family, native to the birch forests and shrubby tundras of the subarctic regions in the Northern Hemisphere. Evolutionarily, these birds are defined by their remarkable seasonal camouflage; they transition from a mottled brown summer plumage to an almost entirely white winter coat to survive in harsh arctic environments. Their distinct rounded wings and tails are specialized aerodynamic adaptations that allow for quick, explosive bursts of flight when escaping predators in dense brush.
