Green-backed White-eye

The Green-backed White-eye is an endemic passerine bird restricted to the island of New Caledonia. Taxonomically classified within the Zosteropidae family, it evolved in isolation, leading to its distinct plumage and behavioral traits. Its existence was documented by naturalists during the nineteenth century, as Western scientists began cataloging the biodiversity of the Melanesian archipelago. The species plays a critical role in the local ecology, primarily acting as a generalist feeder that supports forest health through pollination and seed dispersal.
