Pemba White-eye

The Pemba White-eye, Zosterops vaughani, is a bird species endemic to Pemba Island, located off the coast of Tanzania. Named after the naturalist John Henry Vaughan, who collected the type specimen in the early 20th century, the species evolved in isolation from its mainland relatives. Its physical characteristics, including its rounded wings and tail, are typical of white-eyes that have adapted to a life of foraging within the dense foliage of a restricted island habitat.

The taxonomy of the species was formally established to distinguish it from the broader Zosterops complex. Ornithologists often note the bird's distinct plumage and vocalizations as evidence of its long-term evolutionary divergence. While not a man-made collectible in the traditional sense, it is a highly significant specimen within ornithological circles and island biogeography studies, serving as a primary example of how insular environments shape avian morphology.
