Green-headed Hillstar

The Green-headed Hillstar, Oreotrochilus stolzmanni, is a high-altitude hummingbird species native to the Andean regions of Peru and Ecuador. First formally described in the late 19th century, it inhabits harsh, alpine environments at elevations often exceeding 3,000 meters. The species evolved to thrive in these sparse, frigid habitats by developing specialized foraging behaviors, primarily feeding on the nectar of Chuquiraga shrubs and smaller insects, which sustains them through extreme temperature fluctuations.

The bird's distinct morphology, characterized by its pointed wings and a slightly notched tail, is an evolutionary adaptation for efficient flight in the thin, turbulent air of the high Andes. Ornithologists note that the species' vibrant coloration, particularly the iridescent green crown of the males, serves as a critical signaling mechanism during complex courtship displays.
