Violet-throated Metaltail

The Violet-throated Metaltail is a species of hummingbird endemic to a restricted range in the high-altitude paramo of the Ecuadorian Andes. First described in 1893 by the ornithologist Osbert Salvin, it was named in honor of the collector Oscar Theodor Baron, who discovered the type specimen during his explorations of the region. The bird occupies a very specific ecological niche, inhabiting shrubby montane forests and sub-paramo habitats, which has contributed to its historical scarcity in biological records and its classification as an endangered species.

The physical design of the Metallura baroni is an evolutionary marvel, characterized by its striking iridescent violet throat patch and a deeply notched tail that aids in maneuverability within dense vegetation. Its pointed wing shape is indicative of a species adapted for rapid, energetic flight required to navigate the thin air of its high-altitude home.
