Green Junglefowl

The Green Junglefowl, Gallus varius, is native to the Indonesian islands of Java, Bali, and the Lesser Sunda chain. Unlike its relative, the Red Junglefowl, this species evolved in an isolated island environment, leading to its distinct iridescent plumage and a singular, unlobed comb. Historically, it was integrated into local Javanese culture, appearing in traditional folklore and serving as a progenitor for the Becik Bekisar, a hybrid bird prized for its unique, melancholic vocalizations and striking aesthetic.

Taxonomically described in the 18th century, the species is defined by its compact, rounded wing shape suited for short, explosive bursts of flight and a pointed, elongated tail that contributes to its sleek, avian silhouette. Ornithological documentation from the colonial era highlights the bird’s adaptation to scrublands and secondary forests. It remains a subject of interest for biologists studying island biogeography and the divergence of Gallus species, valued for its complex mating displays and resilient physiological traits.
