Green Longtail

The Green Longtail, Urolais epichlorus, is a small passerine bird endemic to the montane forests of western Cameroon and eastern Nigeria. First described by ornithologists in the early 20th century, it was categorized as a specialized member of the Cisticolidae family, uniquely adapted to the high-altitude cloud forests of the Bamenda Highlands and Mount Oku. Its name reflects its defining morphological trait, a disproportionately long, graduated tail that aids in maneuverability through dense montane undergrowth.

The bird's design is a striking example of evolutionary adaptation, characterized by narrow, pointed wings that facilitate rapid, agile flight within the forest canopy. Its olive-green plumage serves as essential camouflage against the moss-covered vegetation of its habitat. Ornithological documentation from the mid-1900s highlighted its elusive nature and distinct vocalizations, which remain a primary focus for researchers studying the fragile ecosystems of the Afromontane archipelago.
