Hairy-backed Bulbul

The Hairy-backed Bulbul (Tricholestes criniger) was first formally described by the English zoologist Edward Blyth in 1845. As a member of the Pycnonotidae family, it is native to the Sundaic region, specifically inhabiting the lowland forests of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. Its classification within the genus Tricholestes distinguishes it from other bulbuls, a taxonomic separation driven by its unique morphological traits and ecological niche as a shy, canopy-dwelling insectivore.

The bird derives its common name from the elongated, hair-like feathers located on the lower back and rump, a distinctive feature that becomes visible during specific displays or when the bird is agitated. Its design, characterized by a rounded wing and tail shape, is an evolutionary adaptation for maneuvering through dense, complex understory vegetation rather than long-distance flight. Scientific interest in the species has historically focused on its role as an indicator of forest health, as it is particularly sensitive to the habitat fragmentation occurring throughout its Southeast Asian range.
