Hume's Warbler

Hume's Warbler, scientifically classified as Phylloscopus humei, was formally described by William Edwin Brooks in 1878. The species was named in honor of Allan Octavian Hume, a British colonial administrator and amateur ornithologist known as the father of Indian ornithology. It is a small passerine bird that breeds in the high-altitude forests of the Himalayas and the Altai Mountains, migrating to the plains of South Asia for the winter.

The bird is characterized by its specific anatomical features, including pointed wings and a slightly notched tail, which assist in its agile, insectivorous flight patterns. Long considered a subspecies of the yellow-browed warbler, it was elevated to full species status based on distinct vocalizations and genetic evidence. Its design, if one considers its evolutionary biology, is a masterclass in temperate-climate camouflage, featuring a subtle palette of olive-greys and distinct pale wing bars that serve to protect it within dense foliage.
