Iiwi

The Iiwi is an iconic honeycreeper endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, evolved over millennia to fill a specific ecological niche. It is defined by its vibrant scarlet plumage and its distinctive, decurved salmon-colored bill, which has perfectly adapted to feed on the nectar of lobelioid flowers. Historically, the bird held profound cultural significance within Hawaiian society, where its brilliant red feathers were highly prized by royalty for the creation of intricate capes, helmets, and cloaks, known as 'ahu 'ula and mahiole.

The bird's design reflects a specialized evolutionary trajectory within the Hawaiian islands.
