Jackson's Widowbird

Jackson's Widowbird, or Euplectes jacksoni, was first described by the ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1891. It is a member of the Ploceidae family, native to the high-altitude grasslands of Kenya and Tanzania. The bird is most notable for the elaborate mating display of the male, which features a spectacular, long tail that it arches while performing a series of hops to attract females. This specific behavioral adaptation is a prime example of sexual selection, where physical traits are exaggerated by the evolutionary pressure of mate choice.

The bird's design in nature, characterized by its pointed wings and significantly elongated, curved tail feathers, is an evolutionary marvel rather than a human creation. Within the context of avian study, the species became well-known to European naturalists during the late 19th century as explorations of East Africa increased.
