Jackson's Hornbill

Jackson’s Hornbill (Tockus jacksoni) was first described by the ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1891. Named in honor of the British explorer and colonial administrator Frederick John Jackson, the species is native to the arid bushlands of Kenya and Uganda. Its classification emerged during a period of intense European exploration in East Africa, where researchers were documenting regional biodiversity and identifying unique avian adaptations to semi-arid environments.

The bird is distinguished by its striking, mostly black plumage contrasted with white spotting and a characteristic yellow skin patch around the eye. Ornithologists often note its broad wing shape and rounded tail, features that support its specific flight patterns within dense acacia thickets.
