Javan Pied Starling

The Javan Pied Starling, scientifically known as Gracupica jalla, is a passerine bird endemic to the islands of Java and Bali. Historically, this species was common in open woodlands and cultivated areas, characterized by its distinctive pied plumage, pointed wings, and notched tail. Its presence in the wild has been significantly impacted by long-standing traditions of songbird keeping in Indonesia, where it became one of the most sought-after species for private collections.

The decline of the Javan Pied Starling in its natural habitat is a direct result of intensive trapping for the cage-bird trade, which peaked toward the end of the 20th century. Ornithologists and conservationists have noted that while the bird’s design—specifically its social nature and vocal agility—made it an attractive subject for aviculture, these same traits led to its functional extinction in the wild. Current efforts center on captive breeding programs intended to reverse this trend and restore populations to their native range.
