Josephine's Lorikeet

Josephine's Lorikeet (Charmosyna josefinae) was first described by the German ornithologist Otto Finsch in 1873. It is native to the highland forests of New Guinea, an region that has long fascinated naturalists due to its extraordinary avian biodiversity. The bird was named in honor of Josephine, the wife of the naturalist who collected the type specimen, reflecting the common nineteenth-century practice of eponymously naming new discoveries after family members or prominent patrons of science.

The species is distinguished within its genus by its broad wings and rounded tail, physical adaptations suited for the dense, high-altitude canopy environments it inhabits. Its striking plumage, featuring deep red and dark purple-black tones, has made it a subject of interest in taxonomic studies of the Loriinae subfamily.
