Lady Amherst's Pheasant

Lady Amherst's pheasant, scientifically known as Chrysolophus amherstiae, originates from the mountainous regions of southwestern China and southeastern Tibet. The species was formally described in 1828 by William Yarrell, who named it in honor of Sarah Amherst, the wife of William Pitt Amherst, the Governor-General of Bengal. The Amhersts were responsible for introducing the bird to England, where it was initially appreciated by the landed gentry as an ornamental addition to parklands and avian collections due to its striking plumage.

The bird is characterized by its broad wings and an exceptionally long, barred tail, which can constitute a significant portion of its total length. The design of its plumage, particularly the striking black-and-white ruff and the vibrant colors of the male, made it a popular subject for 19th-century ornithological illustrators like John Gould. While the pheasant has been established in the wild in parts of the United Kingdom, it remains primarily recognized in conservation and natural history circles for its elaborate aesthetics and its historical significance in the era of Victorian botanical and zoological exploration.
