Lafresnaye's Piculet

Lafresnaye's Piculet, scientifically classified as Picumnus lafresnayi, was named in honor of the French ornithologist Baron Frédéric de Lafresnaye. It belongs to the Picumnidae subfamily, a group of miniature woodpeckers known for their diminutive size and unique behaviors. These birds are primarily distributed across the western Amazon basin, inhabiting the humid lowland forests of countries including Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia. They represent the specialized evolutionary path of piculets, which have adapted to forage on small branches and bamboo rather than the large tree trunks typically associated with woodpeckers.
