Lewin's Rail

Lewin's Rail, or Lewinia pectoralis, was first formally described by the English ornithologist John Gould in 1838. Named after the artist John William Lewin, who was the first professional artist to settle in the Australian colonies, the species belongs to the Rallidae family. These birds are primarily found in dense wetland vegetation across parts of eastern Australia, New Guinea, and Wallacea, and their secretive nature makes them a prized sighting for ornithologists and bird enthusiasts alike.

The bird is characterized by its rounded wings and short tail, adaptations that suit its preference for skulking through reeds and marshland rather than flying long distances.
