It was first described by the American ornithologist E. Thomas Gilliard and Manuel Celestino in 1961, following an expedition to the high-elevation mossy forests of the Mount Kitanglad range. The species was named in honor of Lina Tabora, an associate of the Philippine National Museum who participated in the field research.
The bird is characterized by its iridescent plumage and distinct morphological features, including its pointed wings and noticeably forked tail, which are adaptations for its specialized nectar-feeding lifestyle. Because it resides in high-altitude, dense forest environments, the species remained relatively elusive for decades.
