Moreau's Sunbird

Moreau's Sunbird, scientifically classified as Cinnyris moreaui, is a rare avian species endemic to the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania. It was formally described by the ornithologist W.L. Sclater in 1933 and named in honor of R.E. Moreau, a prominent British ornithologist who conducted extensive field studies in East Africa during the mid-twentieth century. Its identification helped biologists better understand the unique evolutionary pressures present within the isolated forest fragments of the Udzungwa and Uluguru ranges.

The bird is characterized by its distinct pointed wings and a slightly notched tail, features that have evolved to suit its specialized nectar-feeding lifestyle among high-altitude montane flora. As a member of the Nectariniidae family, its plumage and morphology have been subjects of academic interest for ornithologists documenting the high levels of endemism in Tanzania's Eastern Arc forests. It remains a highly sought-after subject for conservationists focused on protecting these fragile, restricted habitats from environmental encroachment.
