Little Bunting

The Little Bunting, Emberiza pusilla, is a small passerine bird that breeds across the taiga of northern Eurasia, moving south to winter in parts of Southeast Asia. Ornithological documentation of the species dates back to the late 18th century when it was first described by Peter Simon Pallas. As a migratory species, it is frequently studied by naturalists observing transcontinental flight patterns and the ecological transitions between subarctic breeding grounds and temperate wintering ranges.

The physical design of the species, characterized by its distinctively pointed wings and slightly notched tail, is a functional adaptation for its long-distance migration. These features, along with its specific plumage patterns including chestnut cheeks and a streaked crown, were categorized during the 19th-century expansion of taxonomic science.
