Little Green-Pigeon

The Little Green-Pigeon (Treron olax) is a compact, arboreal species native to the tropical forests of the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and Java. Scientifically described by Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1823, this bird belongs to the Columbidae family and is noted for its distinctively rounded wings and square-shaped tail, which assist in its agile, rapid flight through dense forest canopies. It occupies a specialized ecological niche as a frugivore, primarily foraging for small berries and figs in the mid-to-upper levels of the forest.

The species is distinguished by marked sexual dimorphism, with males featuring a notable orange-chestnut patch on the breast and a grey crown, whereas females display more uniform olive-green plumage. Its design—specifically its muted coloration—serves as an evolutionary adaptation for camouflage within the light-dappled foliage of its rainforest habitat. Ornithological documentation from the 19th and 20th centuries has consistently noted the species' elusive nature, as it remains largely sedentary and quiet compared to other members of the genus Treron.
