Long-tailed Ground-Roller

The Long-tailed Ground-Roller, Uratelornis chimaera, is an enigmatic avian species endemic to the spiny forests of southwestern Madagascar. First described by zoologist Charles Lamberton in 1938, the bird stands as the sole member of its genus, representing a distinct evolutionary lineage within the Brachypteraciidae family. It evolved in a highly specialized, arid environment, necessitating its unique morphology—notably its remarkably elongated tail, which sets it apart from its forest-dwelling relatives.

The bird's design is a striking example of terrestrial adaptation. Its rounded wings indicate a preference for ground movement over extended flight, while its tail, which can comprise half of the bird's total length, serves as a prominent feature in its cryptic, earth-toned plumage. Ornithologists have long studied the species for its elusive nature and complex, low-frequency vocalizations.
