Louisiade Spectacled Monarch

The Louisiade Spectacled Monarch, or Symposiachrus melanopterus, is a passerine bird endemic to the Louisiade Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. It was historically considered a subspecies of the spectacled monarch, but modern taxonomic consensus recognizes it as a distinct species due to its specific geographical isolation and plumage characteristics. The bird evolved in the dense forest canopies of islands like Misima and Tagula, where it developed its characteristic rounded wings and notched tail, features that assist in its maneuverability through thick undergrowth while foraging for small insects.

The species was first described by naturalists during the era of late 19th-century colonial exploration, as researchers cataloged the biodiversity of the Melanesian islands. Its design—defined by its dark, striking mask around the eyes—serves as a primary identifying trait.
