Madagascar Pochard

The Madagascar pochard, or Aythya innotata, is a diving duck that was long presumed extinct for much of the 20th century due to habitat degradation and the introduction of invasive species in its native range. Once found throughout the central highlands of Madagascar, the species was famously rediscovered in 2006 on a remote volcanic lake. This discovery triggered an intensive international conservation effort to prevent the species from slipping away, as it remains one of the rarest birds on the planet.

The physical design of this pochard, characterized by its broad wings and rounded tail, is an evolutionary adaptation for its specialized aquatic life in high-altitude wetlands. These features allow the bird to maneuver effectively while diving for benthic invertebrates. The recent preservation efforts, led by the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, have focused on captive breeding programs to stabilize the population, marking a significant chapter in modern avian biology and habitat restoration.
